Inside Birdsall House: A North Yorkshire Wedding Planner’s Experience of Yorkshire Charm

Heritage, Heart, and Hospitality in the North Yorkshire Countryside

As a North Yorkshire wedding planner, I’m always on the lookout for venues that offer not only beauty and grandeur but also heart and hospitality. When I was recently invited to attend the Wedding Planners’ Retreat at Birdsall House, I knew it would be a special experience, and it was.

Nestled near Malton, Birdsall House is a historic gem surrounded by sweeping parkland, lakes, and woodlands. Home to the Willoughby family since 1540, it remains a true family residence, lovingly cared for by Lady Cara Willoughby and her husband James, the 20th generation to live there. The couple have opened their doors to share their home’s beauty, history, and warmth, hosting only a small number of exclusive weddings each year.

A Warm Welcome to Birdsall

Our retreat began in true Yorkshire style – with tea, coffee, and a warm welcome from Lady Cara and her team. We were invited to explore the house and grounds while learning about its rich history and the family’s ongoing role in preserving this special place. From elegant Georgian reception rooms to the tranquil chapel ruins nestled within the gardens, every corner of Birdsall House exudes charm.

We were then taken on a tour of the nearby accommodation option, Langton Hall, which sleeps up to 56 guests. It was easy to see how couples could create a full wedding weekend experience for their guests in this beautiful part of North Yorkshire.

An Evening of Fine Dining and Celebration

After some time to relax and catch up with fellow wedding planners, the evening began with a champagne reception that set a celebratory tone. The highlight of the evening was an exquisite fine dining meal prepared by chef Tom Coe; each course was beautifully presented, using locally sourced ingredients that reflected the season and region.

Later, we descended to The Old Kitchens, a prohibition-style bar and nightclub space beneath the house, where Fusion Event Hospitality served handcrafted cocktails. This hidden part of Birdsall brings a playful, modern twist to a historic venue, offering couples the chance to dance the night away in a setting full of atmosphere and character. Conversation, music, and laughter closed the evening, showing exactly what sets Birdsall House apart: style, hospitality, and togetherness.

A Cosy Morning at Birdsall

The next morning, after a restful night’s stay in the beautifully appointed guest rooms, we gathered for a cosy breakfast and reflected on the experience. It was a wonderful opportunity not only to see the venue through a planner’s eyes but to truly feel the hospitality that Lady Cara and her team bring to every event.

The Perfect Setting for a North Yorkshire Wedding

For couples dreaming of a wedding steeped in heritage and surrounded by countryside beauty, Birdsall House offers a setting that is both grand and personal. The venue is licensed for indoor and outdoor ceremonies, from romantic garden settings to elegant rooms such as the Ballroom, Oval Room, and Dining Room. For those wishing for a traditional church service, St Mary’s Church is just a short walk down the lime tree avenue and seats up to 200 guests.

Receptions can take place throughout the house or in the gardens, with capacity for over 200 guests in a garden marquee overlooking the lakes. Indoors, the Ballroom, Long Hall, and Dining Room provide flexibility and elegance for wedding breakfasts, drinks receptions, or evening celebrations.

And when it comes to the party, The Old Kitchens provide a truly unique after-hours space, complete with cocktail bar, dance floor, and comfortable lounge areas.

A Venue with Heart

One of the things that truly stands out about Birdsall House is its personal approach. Every wedding here is entirely bespoke, crafted around each couple’s vision. The in-house team works closely with couples and planners alike, supported by a hand-picked selection of trusted suppliers, from florists and photographers to caterers and entertainers – all chosen for their quality and professionalism.

As Lady Cara beautifully puts it:

“At Birdsall, our home becomes yours, whether for a day or a weekend, offering a setting of beauty, history, and warmth for memories that last a lifetime.”

Having experienced it firsthand, I can say that this ethos shines through in every detail. Birdsall House is not just a venue; it’s a home that welcomes, inspires, and celebrates. Ready to start planning? Drop me a line and let’s talk.
